One of the things I really enjoyed about my trip was spending time with my nephew and getting to hear him talk. He’s been a pretty reserved and quiet baby in terms of his vocabulary so far in life, but things had changed quite drastically since I last saw him at Christmas. Here are some of his charming and cute words that I just don’t want to forget:
Purpo. Which means purple. He loved pointing out anything that was purple and we always gave him the purple plate at dinner because it just made him so happy.
Turto. Which means turtle. He got a little beany baby type turtle at the General Store in Cooke City and loved to point it out and talk about it with whoever was around.
Tee. Which means tease. He got such a kick out of teasing us, especially my mom, his Granny. He thought he was soooo funny and would laugh and say “Tee! Tee!”.
Baby. Which (surprise, surprise) means baby. He loves to refer to himself as the baby but also likes to point out babies in his food (small fries, etc.), books, and out in nature. Some of my brother’s friends came for a weekend while we were there and they have a 4 month old little girl. Anytime she was in the room, my nephew had to say, “Baby, baby, baby” over and over until we ALL acknowledged that yes, there was a baby in the room.
Boo Daddy. Which means Granddaddy. That’s what my dad is called. Apparently he has been able to say Granddaddy quite clearly in the past, but Boo Daddy was his phrasing choice on this trip. And everyone except for Granddaddy just loved it, so we encouraged it to continue.
Dry. Which means Momma. The thing is he can say Momma and knows who his Mom is, but he likes to call her Dry instead. We think it might stem from getting a dry diaper. Which you know, that’s flattering, isn’t it? I think he really just does it because he thinks he is being clever and funny.
Buh Bye Bye. Which means bye or going bye bye or say bye bye. He said it a lot and it always had the three “b’s” in it, but could be said in different tones to mean different things. By the end of the trip the rest of the family was saying it too, it was so stuck in our heads.
Vroom. Which means car or truck or any type of motor vehicle really. He is OBSESSED with anything that has an engine and needs to point out every one he sees. He could also point out RVs but said it more like a-eee.
Bulldo. Which means Bulldozer. We saw quite a few of these as there was road construction going on in the areas near our cabin. And he would get so excited to see anything that even sort of resembled one.
Taity. Which means Caity. And just melts my heart. Even when he was annoyed with me and came and pushed on my chest with one hand and said “Taity” with disdain.
Besides his sweet vocab (which also included bow-wow for dog and he he for horse), he had the most brilliant laugh. It actually sounds a lot like fake laughter, but it is truly genuine coming from him. He laughs loud and clear, “Ha Ha Ha!” with a look of pure glee on his face. Sometimes I felt like he was laughing so much that I was watching the comedic stylings of Z.
I wanted to write this down here so that I wouldn’t forget about all of these sweet sayings. On the trip I said something to my mom about wanting to always remember his laugh at this moment in time and she pointed out that we will forget. Which in the grand scheme of things is probably true and that makes me a bit sad. So I’m writing it here in hopes that I will preserve this memory just a bit.
a few things that are making me happy in a dreamy sort of way:
*a big beautiful bouquet from our farmer’s market for just five bucks
*tangerine popsicles
*the anticipation of going on a short road trip soon
*fresh raspberry pie at lunchtime
*indulging in a massage and then consequently booking the appointment for the next one
*catching up with one of my best friends
*reading eat, pray, love
*anticipating reading harry potter next
*watching the new season of my boys (started yesterday) with my roommate
Finally I got some stuff done. Finally! Yesterday I had a productive day at work and then I went to our first practice with the brand new cheer squad and then home for a short break while eating dinner and watching my dvr’d Greek and then lo and behold, I cleaned my room, my bathroom, did 2 loads of laundry, sorted through and dealt with a big pile of paperwork I have, and paid bills. Finally. It felt really good to just get some stuff out of the way. There is of course much more on the to do list, but that doesn’t matter at this moment. Instead I just need to bask in the glow of feeling accomplished. As I read other blogs (mostly of strangers) I’m always amazed at those people who can just go, go, go every single day. They get up before 5am and hit the floor running until they go to bed after midnight. At least that’s what it seems like. My body and mind just do not function that way. In fact I’ve found more and more that sometimes I just need a whole day to completely veg out. Which is what I did on Sunday. Maybe that’s why it was much easier to get stuff done yesterday? Anyway, whatever the reason it felt nice.
Our first practice was fun. I’m looking forward to getting to know the new girls and it’s always fun to see the girls who will be cheering their third year step up into leadership roles. Every year I have the sense of things going by so fast and I can never believe that my little babies (which is what I lovingly call sophomores) are already going to be seniors. And it’s always funny to watch them when there are no older girls in the room – they definitely realize that they are top dog now and they definitely like that feeling. I also noticed that I felt really comfortable in my role. I think that comes with this being the sixth squad I will have coached but also the relationship I have with this senior class is much different than any other senior class before it. I think I’m finally getting old enough to feel the distance between us and that makes me feel more comfortable because I know they can’t question my authority as much. Not that I’m a crazy domineering coach, but it can be hard to discipline a girl who is only 5 years younger than you (like my first year coaching). Anyway, enough about all that. It was good and I’m looking forward to seeing how this year pans out.
Today is a bright, crisp fall day. At lunch I drove up Lakeway (a part of town I pretty much never go to once you pass Civic Field) and got a sandwich at Davinci’s (oh, and a dozen donut holes from Lafeen’s, but whatever). Anyway on the drive there you round this corner by the cemetary (ooh spooky for Halloween – except it was the middle of the day so it really wasn’t) and there are these trees all lined up that must have been planted at the same time because they are all the same size. But that must have been awhile ago (like years and years) because they are all pretty big now. Anyway – my point is – the trees were like a fall rainbow. The went from green to yellow to orange to red all in a row. The colors just melted from one tree into the next into the next. And the sun was shining brightly right on them. Beautiful. I actually gasped a little bit. And this from a girl who if you ask anyone who has known me for more than 6 months would tell you that I am not an outdoorsy person.
